I'm 26 lbs over the weight limit, and am 51 years over the age limit. Oh, I also don't play well enough to meet the USMC requirements. Sigh. What the heck, I didn't really want to be back in the military again.

I have always wondered (and if you are/were in a military band, I apologize if this offends. I've just always wondered/never knew),

I get that you have to be in physical shape but if they are in service for just "The Presidents Own" and don't go through basic training, why is the a height/weight requirement?

No matter which band you audition for, you still have to meet the physical standards to be a marine.

This was simply an example. According to their website, the Marines accept males as short as 58" tall. In this example, the max weight for a male 72" tall is 202. The weight allowance is increased or reduced based on height. This is the same as when I was in the Air Force, and my max allowable weight was 193, based on my height.

For those with no prior service it's 29 but can be waived up to 34, However after 20 years of service 12 of which was with the marines I can tell you they can make exceptions if they want you bad enough.

Most of the excerpts look like that would work better on a BBb

For the excerpts, would it be a safe bet to learn both octaves (especially for Stars and Stripes)? Or is there a certain octave they are looking for?

Having taken the previous two "President's Own" auditions, I can tell you from experience that they generally prefer the bottom octave. It's never a bad thing to learn both octaves though!

Their audition packet states to prepare the lower octaves unless otherwise marked in the excerpt. Both couldn't hurt, though.

There's relocation involved for anyone who wins a position with the Marine Band, right? Except those who live in the area I'm guessing.

All,
Just a reminder to send in your application materials earlier rather than later so we can plan for the audition as well as possible. So far we have 6 completed applications. Just a hunch, but I'm thinking there will be more than that!
Thanks, and let me know if there are questions.

1 week to go! Please send in your paperwork asap. Good luck to all who are making the trip. Side note; there is a great deal of construction happening near the Barracks lately. I recommend parking under the freeway between 7th and 8th SE. Enter on 8th St. I believe it is a 4 hour limit on the meters and you can pay with a smartphone app or good old fashioned coins.

I think relocation expenses are the least of the concerns of the people auditioning. Only one of them will have to worry about relocating.
