Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra- Audition Post

Post by Keith Sanders »

Hey gang,

I figured we could use a different post since the other one got a little cluttered. Anyone know what time they start this morning?? I go between 1-2 pm today. I'll make sure to post if I hear anything or how I do. We can post the results here too. Looking forward to playing for them today!

Curious to see who advances! I'm guessing some pretty big names are there today!

I hope they don't mind me posting. But I went from the 1-2 pm hour along with a lot of other talented players. The two that advanced from then were Tom Lukowizc and Michael Stephan. Congrats.

First round rep was

Meistersinger- J-K
Fountains
Hungarian March
Prokofiev 5
Mahler 1 solo

To me a very good experience with this audition. Some very stiff competition. 160 were suppose audition today. 5 automatics for semis and 1 for finals that I heard of.

Thanks for the update. Do you know (or are you at liberty to say) who the five automatic semi-finalists and the automatic finalist were?

I believe that Chris Olka has been doing a lot of playing with the orchestra, and has made some recordings (Prokofiev 5 comes to mind). I also know that Derek Fenstermacher has been subbing with the orchestra, and played second tuba on Symphonie Fantastique with Chris on first tuba. However, I have no idea if either player even considered auditioning since they already have pretty good gigs.

Hey,

The only names I heard for semis automatic are Derek Fenstmacher, John DiCesare, and Tomy Kniffen. Chris Olka is the lone automatic to finals. One of the ladies that worked there said they gave automatic invited to the guys that had been subbing the last couple of years and wanted to audition.

Thanks Keith!

Those are some pretty heavy hitters.

Good luck to everyone that advances.

We should take bets on who wins.

BTW, when are the finals?

Yeah. I thought it was the wrong number, but they had two committees going at the same time- some auditioned on the stage and others in the large rehearsal hall. I think it was 20 per hour with 10 in each room. And this was all day from what I understood.

Only other 2 time blocks I know of was 9 am block and 7 pm block- no one advanced from either to semis.

Is it really fair that some people automatically advance?

I auditioned in the 6-7pm hour and no one from either group advanced in that hour. I did catch them announcing the end of the 4-5 hour. Seth Horner and one other (who's name I didn't recognize) advanced from that hour. One of the gals helping with the audition I spoke with said they were having 8 candidates/hour in each group - so 16 total per hour. Also I spoke with Derek Fenstmacher (who sounded great with the orchestra) after the Mahler 9 concert on Saturday night and he told me there were 158 tuba candidates total. Congrats to all who advanced. I think any of those who have heard Chris Olka play would not have any issues with him being auto-advanced to the finals.

Yes. Those auto advancing have probably been playing in orchestras for years now. They have played on stage with the very orchestra they are auditioning for. I'm fairly certain they can play:

Meistersinger- J-K
Fountains
Hungarian March
Prokofiev 5
Mahler 1 solo

If you didn't advance at this audition, I doubt it was because your spot in the semi's was taken by an auto advanced candidate that doesn't play as well as you.
