I didn't see that anyone had posted this back in 2012 or since, so here it is, the single best piece i've ever read that captures the determination and despair of the classical audition process.

There is a lot of truth in that.

Reminds me of my failed audition about ten years ago. A very high-quality, all-audition wind symphony admitted new members only upon successful audition. I didn't make it. My competition was a retired tuba player from the U.S. Air Force Band-DC. The group had intended to have two tubas, but no one could pass the audition for second. So, for years, the ensemble got by quite nicely with the one tuba.
