One wonders how many years playing with the orchestra it will take to perform the same number of notes as in the audition.
If you count prelims/semis/finals/etc.......
Sounds a little like being an Olympic sprinter -- you train for years and years and years, and are judged on your ability to display perfection 10 seconds at a time.

I can handle the first note on the list and the rests, i wonder if that will be enough to win?

I think those musicians could take three of those excerpts with one solo and find the three best players on that day in a lot less time than it's going to take like this. Just MHO.

Re: 31 Pages of Audition Material

I was wondering the same thing--is this amount of material standard for major league auditions?

It's to thin out the number of applicants. Anyone applying should be able to play all of it and be prepared to play anything on the list. Will it all be asked for, I doubt it.

Yep; they share the house with the NYC Opera (a separate gig).

I learned Penderecki's Cappriccio a while back. I got lots of criticism from my friends along the lines of "no one ever asks for that in an audition and you're wasting your time". It's pretty cool to see it here. That one excerpt from Namouna also looks challenging, too.

Well I didn't get past the resume round, and the e-mail read,

"Dear NYCB Principal Tuba audition applicant:
Thank you for your interest in the current opening in the New York City Ballet Orchestra. Unfortunately, due to an overwhelming response of highly qualified applicants, and after much deliberation, the audition committee is not able to offer you an invitation to this audition. "

anyone have an idea of the numbers involved?

140 applicants I believe. Does anyone know what tubas the previous tuba player mainly used? I'm presuming F and CC?

Steve Johns mainly used his Hirsbrunner CC 4/4. Before that, Toby Hanks used a York CC 4/4.

NYCO hasn't been in the Koch Theatre since they went bankrupt. I believe that they now use the Rose Theatre at Jazz at Lincoln Center down at Columbus Circle.

That was old school, today they want the biggest tubas made 6/4 CC or 6/4 BBb and a 6/4 CC on all f tuba parts. Remember, bigger is better. Lol
