Hello to all you tuba and euphonium players! My two TAs are graduating this year, so Washington State University anticipates some teaching assistantships available for Fall 2018. Potential teaching assignments include studio instruction, general education courses, music major courses, recording studio, music technology, and stage management. I developed a new film music course, so that's also a possibility! In addition to these assistantships, WSU has funding for a diverse scholars program, an initiative designed to fund underserved/underrepresented communities in graduate education. Both tuba and euphonium players are encouraged to apply!

Washington State University is a large research university located in Pullman, WA, and it is a member of the Pac 12 athletic conference. The tuba-euphonium studio is thriving. At an average of 12-13 players, the studio contains first-year students to graduate students. The studio culture here is positive, encouraging, and supports a friendly kind of competition. In 2013 and 2017, the studio helped host the Northwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conferences, and they performed at the 2015 NW Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Boise, ID. Additionally, members of the studio have been prizewinners at state, regional, and international competitions. Guest artists regularly visit our campus for recitals and master classes.

Ensembles for tuba and euphonium players include the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, athletic bands, Brass Ensemble, Tuba Choir, and quartets/quintets. The WSU School of Music houses a state-of-the-art recording studio made available to students for recording projects. Pullman is located in the Palouse region of the Northwest, and the area supports the arts, culture, is family-friendly, and boasts a mild climate low in humidity.

Assistantships at Washington State University are hefty monetary awards. They come with a full tuition waiver, a yearly stipend of $14,166 in direct salary, as well as health insurance. The earlier you apply, the better. Good grades help! An application includes the online WSU graduate school application and fee, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and an audition/interview with the brass faculty. Recorded auditions may be accepted if a trip to Washington becomes impossible.
