Brass Studies at CalArts

Post by Luke Storm »

The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts seeks graduate and undergraduate brass applicants for its BFA, MFA, and DMA degree programs. Building from a traditional foundation, the CalArts brass program focuses on contemporary works and performance practices while offering a flexible and inclusive curriculum for the study of jazz, composition, non-Western music, and music technology.

Envisioned and founded by Walt Disney, CalArts offers a unique environment that fosters interdisciplinary and cross-cultural learning and collaboration. CalArts is located just north of Los Angeles, providing easy access to one of the world’s great cultural capitals.

Graduates of the CalArts brass program hold positions in orchestras and contemporary music ensembles around the world, regularly record for major film and television soundtracks, and are creative leaders through solo and chamber music projects.

The CalArts brass faculty is led by trumpet virtuoso and recording artist Edward Carroll and includes legendary studio tubist Doug Tornquist and the members of Trio Kobayashi: Allen Fogle, horn; Matt Barbier, trombone; and Luke Storm, tuba. Students are also encouraged to study with jazz faculty members Alex Iles and John Fumo.
