Here's some info, for those curious, about the way things went down in Denver:
The audition was run very smoothly and the staff put everyone at ease and nothing was hurried. Every tuba player I met there was friendly and prepared.
There were two committees who heard six players every hour. The preliminary excerpts were Fountains of Rome, Prokofiev 5th, Mahler 1, and American in Paris. I don't know the finals excerpts.
I won't speculate about what the committees were looking for but some things were clear. I suspect both committees had extremely specific ideas upfront about what kind of sound concept and interpretation of the excerpts they wanted. That's not really a surprise given they had so many players in only two rounds. One strange thing was that no one I knew or met there was asked to play anything again in the preliminary rounds. Again, time could have been a factor.
As with any audition, it came down to what they were listening for in style and sound. It was not a question of ability (most everyone had the notes), experience or pedigree. I can think of several virtuosos who were not even allowed to finish the excerpts in the prelims. Again, this is status quo with auditions.
Of course, my most sincerest congratulations to the winner. Denver is a wonderful city and I wish him success there.
No one who tells you what you want to hear at someone else's detriment is acting in your best interest.
