The University of South Florida School of Music (Joseph Alvarez, Professor of Tuba and Euphonium) will have an assistantship available for those seeking a MM in euphonium or tuba performance or music education (with an emphasis in euphonium or tuba) beginning in August 2020.

Includes:
-Full tuition waiver (renewable for a second year based on performance and GPA)
-Bi-weekly stipend (approximately $250)
-Health Insurance
-Weekly lesson with Joseph Alvarez
-Weekly group fundamentals, masterclass, and tuba-euphonium ensemble
-Integral coordination with all tuba/euphonium guest artists

Duties/Responsibilities include:
-Student is responsible for paying certain fees as stipulated by the university
-Student is responsible for 5 hours per week assisting major professor; traditionally these duties have included periodic teaching of studio members with professor if unavailable, periodically leading studio classes, coaching undergraduate tuba-euphonium chamber groups, and office work.
-Student may also be required to assist an outside professor 5 hours per week; traditionally this has been grading an online course

In the past two years, Mr. Joseph Alvarez has premiered two new tuba concertos with percussion with the McCormick Percussion Group – Tyler Kline’s Loam and Matthew Kennedy’s In Pursuit of Ghosts. His next project includes a premiere of a new work in 2020 by Matthew Kennedy entitled High Anxieties for contrabass tuba and piano.

Joseph Alvarez is the Lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of South Florida and the principal tubist of the Venice Symphony and Imperial Symphony. Prior to that, he served as principal tubist of the Sinfonia da camera in Urbana, IL. Mr. Alvarez has performed with ensembles such as the Sarasota Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, New World Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, and Chicago-based new music collective dal niente. He has performed under the baton of conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Barry Wordsworth, Leonard Slatkin, James Gaffigan, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Larry Rachleff, Peter Oundjian, and Kristjan Jarvi.

His recent involvement with Detroit-based Sphinx, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of young Black and Latinx classical musicians have yielded two grants and highly-selective invitations to audition intensives and workshops. In 2018, Mr. Alvarez was a performing artist and adjudicator at the Southeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (SERTEC) in Tallahassee, FL.

With a passion for expanding the repertoire of the tuba and euphonium, Mr. Alvarez regularly programs his own arrangements on recitals. His arrangement of Prokofiev’s Five Songs Without Words is published through Cherry Classics.

Joseph Alvarez was the tuba fellow at the Music Academy of the West for three summers where he studied with Ralph Sauer and Mark Lawrence. He also served as the tuba fellow with the National Repertory Orchestra.

Mr. Alvarez holds degrees from the University of South Florida (BM), Northwestern University (MM), and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois. His primary teachers include Jay Hunsberger, Rex Martin, and Mark Moore.

There is the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, the Museum of Science and Industry (right across the street from our Tampa campus), the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and the Tampa Museum of Art, as well as USF's own highly acclaimed Contemporary Museum of Art, and Schools of Music, Theatre and Dance.
