1) That blows.
2) He will land on his feet, for sure. I wouldn't be excited if I were going to the next major audition if I know HE was gonna be there!

Sounds like St. Louis didn't grant him tenure for whatever reason. Derek is a monster player; he will get something else. Glad I don't do symphony auditions -- way too much stress, and counting rests.

I think Derek will enjoy the weather in Los Angeles more, anyway.

^ Wouldn't that be something. It's happened more than a few times -- someone not tenured or not winning a particular audition, to then win a bigger, more major audition. Los Angeles is a major "big daddy" audition for sure

Is it customary to be granted tenure after only a year??toobagrowl wrote:Sounds like St. Louis didn't grant him tenure for whatever reason.

If this is even a little how it looks, auditionees might want to seriously consider whether it's worth going to this one. My 2 cents.

Re: St. Louis Symphony Principal Tuba
^ Guessing bort is joking with that emoticon-smiley. It is my understanding that most symphony orchestras have a 2-year 'probation' after the audition is 'won', and then decide if they want to grant them tenure and keep them in the orchestra. Some orchestras may have just a 1-year 'probation' period after an audition/before tenure

I hope Derek wins the LA job. It's the highest paid orchestra in the U.S., ahead of San Francisco and Chicago.
