Announcing The Total Tubist online tuba course

Post by Craig Knox »

We are excited to announce the launch of The Total Tubist, a LIVE online course for tuba players who want to take their playing to the next level. Craig Knox (Principal Tuba of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, founding member of the Center City Brass Quintet, and faculty member of the Curtis Institute of Music and Carnegie Mellon University) and John DiCesare (Principal Tuba of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and faculty member of University of Washington) have joined to develop The Total Tubist, a program that will utilize a regular schedule of live online group instructional sessions, seminars, and masterclasses to create a comprehensive course of study for the serious tuba player. The Total Tubist will perfectly complement the music curriculum of a college music major or advanced high school student, and serve as an added resource to help these tuba players achieve their goals. Serious amateurs will gain from the program as well.

Each month, The Total Tubist participants will benefit from live instructional zoom sessions, including regular Weekly Fundamental Classes (4 per month), Weekly Repertoire Classes (4 per month), as well as Special Topic Seminars (2 per month). Craig or John will lead all classes, and the live Zoom format allows for questions and interaction during the sessions. In addition, Craig and John will join for a monthly live Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions relating to playing, practicing, performing, and creating a successful career as a tuba player. Video recordings of all instruction will be available following each class, so that participants have the option of attending the live session or accessing the content at a time that suits their schedule.

The Weekly Fundamental Classes are the backbone of the course, in which the instructor will demonstrate and discuss the concepts and approaches needed to develop excellent playing technique on the tuba. Participants will receive a PDF packet of the material to be covered prior to each class, so that they can play along with the instructor.

The Weekly Repertoire Classes will focus on important repertoire from the standard solo literature, as well as orchestral and band works, and common audition excerpts. Each week, the instructor will take the class through a systematic approach to learning, practicing, and performing these important pieces.

The Special Topic Seminars are an opportunity for in-depth exploration of a wide-range of important aspects of playing, musicianship, and career development, including Audition Preparation, Practice Hacks, and Phrasing and Interpretation.

The Total Tubist is an ongoing course which will take place during the 5-month period of January-May 2021. Each month includes a minimum of 11 hours of live instructional content. Participants may choose to enroll for any month-long session, or for the entire course. Private lessons with John DiCesare and Craig Knox can be added to the program at an additional cost, subject to availability. The Total Tubist participants receive a discounted private-lesson rate.

The Total Tubist classes begin on January 9! For more information on the program, and to enroll today, please visit https://www.thetotaltubist.com
