The Montreal SYmphony's recording under Dutoit it spectacular. Ellis Wean and Pierre Beaudry really lay it down in "Trevi" it is coupled with the obligatory "Pines" and "Festivals". You will not be sorry should you choose this.

I will second and third the Montrealrecommendation. What a recording! This and the Reiner/CSO are my 2 favorite recordings of this rep. Another very good recording that has a ton of tuba presence is the Boston Symphony with Ozawa from the 80's. Man can you hear Chester Schmitz!

I was wondering about the Boston recording myself. I read tsomewhere that it was pretty good, and that you could hear Mr. Schmitz several miles away. I also heard the New York Phil. under Sinopoli playing "Roman Festivals" on the radio yesterday. Warren Deck was definately audible. I haven't heard the "Fountains" they did with Sinopoli, but if this is any indication we may have a winner.

I remember going to the live performances with Sinopoli that became the DG "Live" recording of the Respighis. These were some of the most memorable concerts I have ever experienced. I went the first night and simply had to go back again the following night. Although there is some low brass present on the DG recording, it PALES in comparison to what was heard in Avery Fisher those evenings.

True story: I was working for HMV Records in NY (during my college days) at the time the Sinopoli Respighis were released. The day the CD came out on the market, we happened to be hosting a special in-store promotional performance for another recently released CD: the EMI Gerhard Meinl's Tuba Sextet recording. So we had the quartet of Joe Alessi, Dave Finlayson, Warren Deck and Sam Pilafian performing in the store! Shortly after they finished, I mentioned to the guys that the Respighi had been received in the store that day. So I tore the new CD open, gently removed the recording of guitar concertos that was playing at the time and jumped to Fountain of Trevi. All listened intently as Trevi began to rev up. Once the big excerpt began, the disappointment was clear. It had been so poorly engineered that the low brass sounded like they were miles away from the mike. Warren was especially displeased.

Just another reason why I am transferring all of those amazing live radio broadcasts of concerts from the good ole days that I have on cassette to digital -- less engineer interference!

By the way, for any of you that may be interested in transferring tapes or LPs to digital, I found an easy program online called polderbits that I have been using. It is inexpensive, easy to use and does a pretty good job. It's nice to be able to digitize all my old recitals on cassette before they have completed deteriorated!
