Who is the RCN Commercial Tuba Player?

Post by Tuba-G Bass »

Hi Bob,

It's little ol' me! The horn is my M&M 4RV BBb, and the retired Baseball player is Ryne Sandberg,
Former Cubs 2nd Baseman and Hall of Famer.
We taped that in January, the tough part was carrying the horn without a strap
and not banging the stovepipe bell on the doorframe!

I am the Senior TV Editor for RCN TV in the Lehigh Valley, PA
[Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton] We had flown Ryne in from Chicago to tape some commercials
and my Tuba playing had already been featured on some internal RCN video's, where we had
done a ripoff of the David Letterman show, and since my name is
Paul, etc. I recorded myself playing take me out to the ballgame, and the Corporate editor I work with
doubled the speed of the music for the ad. We had taped other versions,
like Ryne sitting in a cubicle eating peanuts and putting on anti-glare stuff under his eyes.

Ryne was a real nice guy, he had a long day, with videotaping, still photography,
and radio spots all being done from 8am to 6pm. RCN Chicago has him on retainer to do advertising,
since their coverage area is in the north part of town, the Cubs are popular on that side of town.

Dixieland on Contrabass Trombone

Post by Tuba-G Bass »

Hi Bob,

Sure! :D
How about Basin Street Blues? Does that qualify as Dixieland? Or does it have to be all improv?

Snicker!

Stovepipe bells, Hate 'em!

Post by Tuba-G Bass »

Hey guys,

Yes, I don't like the tall "stovepipe" bell of my M&M,
it is very unstable to stand on the bell, and it puts the
real sound too far from my ears.
I heard that the old "Schneider"
and "Weltklang" were
good stovepipe horns.

I am saving up to get a Miraphone BBb 1291,
hopefully the "last" tuba I will ever buy!

HA-HA. Famous last words of every tuba player. In for a penny, in for a pound.
