Hmm...I can't find any reference to "Orpheus Camerata" in my usual sources for lists of classical recordings. I found an Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York, but they don't use a tuba. Do you know what recording label produced the recording you heard? That might help me track the group down.

I'm sure you're correct...if they need a tuba there's plenty of "on-call" players in New York. Unless you can give us a specific recording it would be difficult to pin down who they might use...there's undoubtedly more than one player who joins them from time to time. Maybe one of the New York freelancers on here would have an idea.

http://www.orpheusnyc.com/Orchestra_Discography.html has the complete discography of that group, including two Stravinsky sessions on Deutsche Grammophon. Very little music which uses tuba. The second Stravisnky recording listed includes the Suite No. 2 for small orchestra...is that the one you're talking about?

EDIT: Sorry, I posted just after you did. I'll check my sources and see if any have a listing of musicians on that session.

RE-EDIT: No luck on the web...it seems they list everyone else on that recording but the tubist. It did win a Grammy award in 2001, though...you would think one could find a list of personnel, but I'm willing to bet the tubist who played in that recording session in 1996 isn't even listed in the credits.

Well, since the recording in question is from 1996, it doesn't really matter who their main on-call tuba player is these days, anyway. I sent an email request to their contact person on the website and asked if they can tell me who the tubist was on that recording session. I'll post the answer here if/when they respond back.

If you'll check the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra website (http://www.orpheusnyc.com/The_Orchestra.html), you'll notice they don't list a tubist in their roster. That's what I meant when I said earlier that they don't use a tuba...sorry I wasn't more clear.

EDIT: I received a nice email from Beth Holmgren at Orpheus. She said that according to the liner notes Marcus Rojas played tuba on that recording. Interesting that your professor who has the recording (and, presumably, the liner notes...surely he doesn't have an illegal bootleg copy :) ) couldn't find that out. I was wrong (again) and shouldn't have assumed he wouldn't be listed.

Thank god for that 'fake tubenet' loophole!

Do you really mean that or will you be replying to specific posts in less than two weeks (13 days)?
