Yes, it's a nice album except for the tuba.

He also did one with John Coltrane. Same comment.

If you look on YouTube you will also find Ray Draper with Booker Little and Max Roach...which one of those did not belong?

Fellow did not have a very nice life. Part of it may have been due to the fact that he was put in situations that were miles above his head musically.

Can't recall if I ever met him in person in NYC, late 60s-mid 70s. He was in LA around that time as well.

I have the "Red Beans & Rice" LP somewhere tucked away as well.

I cannot say with any honesty that I liked his playing. I had the album. After the third or fourth playing I tossed it. Sorry. :tuba:

Two with John Coltrane:

1957: The Ray Draper Quintet featuring John Coltrane (New Jazz 8228) with John Coltrane, Gil Coggins, Larry Ritchie, Spanky DeBrest
1958: A Tuba Jazz (Jubilee Records) with John Coltrane, John Maher, Spansky Debrest, Larrie Ritchie

How could Ray Draper have gotten together with these guys? I listened to a few tunes on youtube and it's an odd match to say the least.
