Anyone know who would've been playing tuba on the 1975 recording of Prokofiev Symphony No. 5 with Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra? Would've had to have been Fletcher, right? Great big present tuba sound, which is rare for recordings of the time.

John Fletcher
Holton 345

I picked up my copy of that one in 1985 and still have it. It had been out for a decade at that time, so I think I paid like $5 for the record, brand new, out of the discount racks.

Exquisite tuba playing…

Will soon be playing the Prokofiev 5th, so took a listen to this one. It's available on YouTube, if anyone's interested. Fletcher sounds great. There must have been a mic right over his bell. If I weren't a tuba player, though, I might find this recording a little annoying. The tuba is almost too dominant in some sections. (And Previn's tempos sound rushed in spots.) But for a full, sonorous sound from the tuba, you can't beat it.
