I believe Chester Schimdt and Sam Pilafian played on the 1989 recording of Empire Brass performing the Gabrielli.
Please correct me if I am mistaken but does anybody know without a doubt what those two were playing.
I heard they were Alexanders.

the tubists were Sam Pilafian and Gary Ofenloch. I think that Mr. Pilafian was using a MW32 at that point and Mr. Ofenloch an HB-6, but I'm not entirely sure.

I think Chester Schmitz was on the Canadian Brass version with New York(Deck) and Boston brass sections.no offence but Chuck was pretty well out classed...

Are you sure that was Chester? I believe I remember seeing only two tubists on that disc and they were Warren Deck and Chuck Dallenbach. Isn't this disc on DVD too? Check out some of the old Boston Symphony/Pops recordings. It would be very hard to "out-class" Chester's playing in my opinion.

The Canadian Brass' Gabrieli CD has Chuck, Warren, and Bob Tucci playing.

I didn't see Bob Tucci listed in the performers. Go to the site and hit CTRL F. Type in Tucci and there are no results from that page. I stand by my first post that the tubas were Warren and Chuck as you can see in the performers listed for each track. Chester was excluded on this disc for some reason.

I own this CD. Not only is Bob Tucci listed in the liner notes, he's even (mis)attributed to a particular channel. When the tubaists play, it's evident who's who though.

Canadian Brass have released at least two discs playing Gabrieli.
The tuba players on the first one, Antiphonal music, are Daellenbach, Deck and Tucci. The tuba players on the second one, Gabrieli for brass, are Daellenbach and Deck.

OK.... now it's clear. I was referring to the first(the one I own) and UncleBeer was referring to the second. I could have sworn there were only two one mine and on the DVD of this disc.

Some of the confusion may be that Bob Tucci was a "last minute" replacement for Chester, who had originally planned to play......EITHER are GREAT players in their own right. I had the good fortune to study with Chester (at Tanglewood in 1971) and with Tucci in 1973-5 (while a member of the Nuremberg Philharmonic) Both are GREAT teachers, too. When I was studying with Tucci, he sounded JUST LIKE Jacobs. Chuck D. told me it was interesting to hear Bob play as he had made the same "observation" in the early 70s, and noted at the Gabrielli "session" that Bob had since cultivated his "OWN" sound. I have yet to hear the C.B. Gabrielli recording, but now I'm going to have to go out and get it. Tucci's great command of the tuba is too little appreciated, at least in the U.S. I wish more recordings of him existed.

what type of tuba was Chester playing on in the Red, White and Blue recording with New York and the Canadian Brass...I'm sure it was a CC but made by who and what model???

He is still playing.He's substituted for most of the pro. orchestras in Florida,and was the guest soloist with the Pensacola Symph.on New Year's Eve of '04.Thats his recent playing that i know of,there's probably more.Still sounds great.

I have the video of this recording. The tuba players are Warren, Chuck and Chester. Chester was playing a Yorkbrunner, Warren his Conn "Frankentuba" and Chuck a small CC which looks like a Yamaha with a small York bell.

I think Gary was using a Willson 3050 RZ at the time.
