I fell in love with this piece the first time I heard it on the CD, "Southern Music Company Presents Music for Concert Band, Volume 8." Yes, it has its great tuba solo at the beginning, but the whole symphony is accessible, colorful, and melodious in its late 20th century musical language. The story behind the writing of the piece makes it all the more moving.
The Barnes Symphony #3 was commissioned by the US Air Force Band, and it is apparently their recording in its entirety that Southern Music issued on their sampler CD. Who was in the tuba section for this recording, and who played principal tuba?
