In the extended version of the first or second film, they have a documentary on the music and show the New Zealand SO recording the music. It looked as if they were using a pretty straight ahead group with an extra bone and what seemed like a gazillion horns. Ever notice how little the trumpets have to play and how he scored alot of the sound for the low brass and extended horns?

I played an arrangement of that...It was fun...I remember how one of the parts was near quarter=160, and that the conductor wore a Gollum mask during that movement...

I just recently sold my hirsbrunner hb-21 to Owen Slade of the London Phil. I delivered it to london for him and got to have lunch with him. He said he did the 3rd one...that guy can PLAY.
