Richard Maloof was the tuba player. Dick is now retired from playing and lives in the San Fernando Valley.

Welk also had a tuba player with the first name of Buddy. I can't for the life of me remember his last name. I will try to find out on Sunday when I see a friend of his.

A fellow, late of here, purchased a Miraphone 186 BBb from Hayes' widow. It was still in its original wooden packing crate.

Buddy's Martin bellfront is now owned by a chap in the Seattle area. I am hoping to try out the horn tomorrow and see what she plays like.

I found a list of the Lawrence Welk Tuba players:

Buddy Hayes (1954-1966)
Buddy Clark (1966-1967)
Richard Maloof (1967-1982)

http://welknotes.com/Lawrence-Welk-Show ... -Years.htm

Dick Maloof is the only tubist who is still alive.

There is an interesting story regarding Buddy Hayes' early days on the Welk TV show. His Martin was originally lacquered, but proved too bright and reflective for the cameras, so the horn was stripped. Despite its 72 years, the horn still plays well and with the usual big Martin sound. It plays at least as well as a 1936 4 valve Martin 6/4 that I tried last November and sounds a little warmer without lacquer. A truely delightful horn.
