SPECIAL TO THE STAR-TELEGRAM/BOB BOOTH
Tuba player Zachary Collins played music for Mater and the Ghostlight, which was featured on Pixar's Cars DVD.When Becky and Bill Collins watched X-Men 3 and Rocky Balboa, they were listening for the tuba music.

That's because their son, Zachary, played the instrument in those movies.

He also played music for the movie Bobby and Mater and the Ghostlight, a short feature from Pixar that appeared on the Cars DVD.

"I'm really amazed that all this has happened to him," said Becky Collins of far north Fort Worth. "He's been blessed with some wonderful opportunities since moving to California."

Zachary Collins, 25, who grew up in Watauga and graduated from Fossil Ridge High School in 1999, is a doctoral music student at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Two USC professors, Jim Self and the late Tommy Johnson, who performed in movie scores, recommended Collins for the films.

For Rocky Balboa, Collins worked with Bill Conti, who composed the famous Rocky theme song.

"That was really one of the more exciting ones I've been in," Zachary Collins said. "I grew up hearing that music. And to be actually playing it with the guy who wrote it was very fun."

In 2003, Collins graduated from Texas Christian University, where he met his wife, Courtney. She teaches sixth-grade math and science in Hollywood. He earned his master's degree at USC in 2004 and is working on his doctorate in musical arts, which he expects to receive in the spring of 2008.

Eventually, he hopes to teach at a university.

His tuba will be heard in the Nicolas Cage sci-fi thriller, Next, which is scheduled to be released this year.

Does he listen for himself?

"I do," he said. "It's kind of cool."
