Depending when the recording was made, it may have Mr. Novotny's swan song. There was a DVD around a few years back that had Tschaik. 6 from Japan with Berstein around the same time. Mr. Novotny was on that show.

I believe the auditions were held in Feb/March of 1979 with Mr. Deck taking over that fall. Kevin Ladd was preparing for it and played the whole list complete with the Kraft "Encounters" on it in a repetoire class at OCC. Look at the date, especially if it is a DG re-issue as they were pretty good about putting the date of the recording on it. If not, it's anyones guess.

It would be fitting as I remember one of Mr. Bell's last recordings was the landmark recording of Shosty 5 that the NYPO made right after they came back from their tour in Russia. The teacher and the pupil going out on the same chart, don't see that every day.

Who ever is on bass trombone on that recording is sure blasting like i've never heard on Shostakovich 5!!

That recording was done,I believe, in January of 1979. Bass trombone would have been Donald Harwood. Its a great recording. I just happened to have purchased an LP of this yesterday at a local used store. Also ended up with the Solti Ring on CD for next to nothing! And an LP of German Beer Drinking songs that is an absolute blast to listen to. And whoever is playing tuba on this pretty much shakes the foundation of my house.

It was, indeed, done in January of 1979. I have an old VHS of the concert (it was broadcast on PBS and I have the VHS that I bought from my local PBS station during a fund raiser). It was Joe Novotny and a very young Don Harwood on Bass Trombone. What a kick. The Tschaik. 6th they did on that tour was great as well.

Kevin Ladd was, and is, one of the best tuba players I have ever had the good fortune to be around. Before FS stopped my playing career, his was the sound in my head that I tried to emulate. Didn't hurt that I studied with him for 3 years and heard him every chance I could down at the Center. He played the list for the NYPO great and nailed the Encounters AFTER HE PLAYED THE LIST DOWN!!!

Ed Herman, Joel Elias, Don Harwood, and Joe Novotny.

There are way too many unsung heroes that we don't look at, simply because they just did their job, and were glad to do that as well as possible.

Joe Novotny is definitely one of those heroes.
