Just a few questions about the Gene Pokorny era in St. Louis:

What were the years he played in the orchestra?
Is he the tuba player on all of the St. Louis/Slatkin recordings?
Who was his predecessor?
Anyone know what instruments Gene used in St. Louis?
I have read that he played a 4/4 HB on the Prokofiev 5 recording. Did he use that horn on other recordings as well?

Yes, that HB was his primary instrument until about 1986 or 87 or so, when he got a Yorkbrunner (I'm not sure of the date). I think the 4/4 was used on the Prokofiev.
Slatkin was around before Gene, so it's not necessarily Gene on all the Slatkin recordings. He also used a B&S F, I"m not sure of other big horns he had at that time.

John McInulty was he predecessor. Gene left in 90? 89? whenever he took the CSO gig. Mike Sanders had played some summer and other sub stuff on occasion, and is now the principal in the SLSO; I remember a very nice "Fantastique" from '87 or so, with Gene and Mike on matching B&S Fs.

Maybe Mike can add more details, and correct any unintentional errors in the above info.

(I also fondly remember the SLUTS conference from '87--the St Louis United Tuba Society)

Fritz Kaenzig (and probably others) also subbed through the time around 89-90--but
I can't say if he recorded with them.
