"That Sunday, That Summer" - Nat "King" Cole

A co-worker who is not a musician asked me about this recording:
http://www.last.fm/music/Nat+King+Cole/ ... hat+Summer
He mentioned that it sounded like a string bass with the longer sustain of a tuba. When listening to the recording, it sounds like string bass in the right channel and tuba in the left channel. The tuba apparently plays exactly the same notes that the string bass plays minus some eighth notes in the 12/8 meter (example at 2:11 in the recording).
Is this the correct instrumentation and, if so, as the forum category asks, Who played tuba...?
