I found this video on YouTube today, and I'm curious to know who the tuba player is in the video. He appears to be playing a Rudy CC tuba, based on what I can see of it, (the 5th valve slide seems to point to that particular brand.) Anyone know who this is?

That is Paul Krzywicki, who started in the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1971. They recorded this for RCA around the same time. It is still available on CD if you look hard enough.

Paul Kryzwicki playing a Hirsbrunner. He was playing that horn when I studied with him during the summer of 1977 at SPAC. Wonderful instrument. This is one of my very favorite recordings of the Planets, well worth the search. I was able to pick it up from a retailer in Japan a couple of years back. I still have the vinyl copy I purchased in 1976.

Truly great recording...Glenn Dodson, Dee Stewart, Robert Harper, and Paul Kryzwicki just reminded me why that is one of the best sections ever! What a gorgeous sound!

I remember playing that particular horn (as much as a know-it-all 17 y.o can judge)and thought it was pretty good. Later when I was teaching at the SOM I had a student in the USMC named Allen Moss who had one. I couldn't talk him into selling it to me. Although that particular horn had seen better days, it played BETTER than my VERY GOOD Alex, having an astounding low register, and was very in tune with itself. I know tuba players have gone a whole different route in the arms race of the past 10-15 years, but I thought this was the perfect all-around tuba, kinda of like a Mirafone 188 on super steroids. I remember Mr. Kryzwicki laying waste to the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony during the summer of '77 and wondering if I would ever be that good. That I now conduct for a living should provide everyone with that answer.

P.S.- Allen hit the band at Parris Island in March of 1988. Anyone, and I know this is a long shot, serve with him? Great guy and a solid tuba player. Was a Master Auto Mechanic and was DEFINITELY a guy you didn't want to cross. NFL linebacker stature, if you kenn.
