What is your favorite recording with the big man Gene Pokorny in it?

No recording captures what he sounds like live.....they just cannot capture how MUSICAL he is in an ensemble. I learned more by going to hear him play than I did from anything else. Do yourself a favor. Find something good on the CSO schedule, and budget $500 to fly to Chicago, take a lesson with Gene, and see a concert that night. Sit in the Terrace Level (the 10-12 rows behind the orchestra) if you can.
I've said this before, but if I had to pick one recording it would be the most recent Mahler 3 recording with Haitink conducting (live). Again, it does nothing to capture what it sounded like LIVE, but it's close. Gene was amazing. Tommy Johnson had just passed away earlier that week and I remember Gene was very emotional in the lesson I had with him. It really came through in his playing. Chris Martin also sounded unbelievable.

Isaac,
You have a place to crash here next year....Bloomington is only 4 hours away....
No recording can do Gene's playing (or the CSO for that matter) justice. You just have to come experience it in the Hall.

Tuba Tracks - Great album.
I got to see the CSO Brass in concert a few years ago and they were PHENOMENAL as expected.
