CSO 1977 Pictures at an Exhibition: Bydlo solo

Post by SFA Tubajack »

Some debate has popped up between some friends and myself. We want to know who played the Bydlo solo and what it was played on.

Some believe it was Arnold Jacobs on his Bb tuba, some think he played it on his F tuba. Some others think it was played on euphonium.

Are any of these right?

Cheers,
Chris

To my knowledge, the last time Mr. Jacobs recorded Bydlo was in 1967 on the RCA recording with Ozawa. The only other one I am aware of is the Kubelik recording on Mercury from 1951. On the later recordings, including 1976 with Guilini and 1980 with Solti, I'm pretty sure Jay Friedman played Bydlo on euphonium. I think Bob Lambert played Bydlo on the Reiner recording from 1957.
