I'm drawing a blank, What was his real name, and when was he playing. Was he an artist for a time for Conn? And when?

Perhaps you're thinking of John Kuhn, who played for the Sousa band among others (check Wiki, etc.).

There were a very limited number of ornately engraved raincatchers built by Holton in the 1930's with an image of a Native American wearing feathers and surrounded by stars and stripes with the designation "The Chief" clearly appearing on the bell. Don Harry owns one of these; a rather recluse band director in Chicago owns another one.

He also had the "Conn-Chief" mouthpiece named for him.
