"The Real Thing" includes Bob Stewart, Joe Daley, Earl McIntrye, and Howard Johnson on Tubas and other things. I think Dave Bargeron had just joined Blood Sweat and Tears at that point. The Cd is on Columbia Legacy, and well worth owning. Peace. ASG

Re: taj mahal
Hope it isn't against the rules to revive an old thread.
I agree with tubad about Howard Johnson, I've been a fan since he backed Taj Mahal years ago. A couple of youtube videos folks here might enjoy:

Tuba Anyone?

Re: taj mahal
I know that this is the "who played" thread but I have a slightly different question: Does anyone know what Janos Mazura (see link in above post) plays? Looks European (Miraphone, etc.) but Martian attenae looking tuning slides extending above the top bow? Or are those custom additional loops that he has had added?
Another video of him playing this horn:

Re: taj mahal
I somehow managed to get 6 of us local New Orleans sousaphonists to join Taj's Real Thing tuba band at the 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
This is one of those moments I will never forget. 6 sousas and those 4 legends on tuba. I still can't believe it, and it was about 5 months ago!

Here's "Hotcakes" by Carly Simon. It's my understanding that Howard Johnson was the tuba player in the backup ensemble.
