A Seasonal Shout-Out

Every Christmas we are inundated with performances of the "Messiah". Tuba players never get a chance to have any fun, BUT I suggest all of you search out the Handel/Goosens orchestratration as performed by the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Thomas Beecham. It's got a great tuba part along with a whole host of other Handelian omissions, most notably an entire percussion section!! This isn't you average Messiah, it has a huge chorus, great soloists, and the tempos are positively Klempererian in their slowness. It is good fun, and if my research is correct, it has never been performed since. Pity, it is the "hammer and anvil" type of approach that would be a welcome relief in this season of "Musical Correctness".

Chuck"too many performances of a "correct" Handel this month make me like this one all the more"Jackson

I just performed the "Soulful Hallelujia" and I could do with a lot less of that.
