Howard Johnson gave a presentation at the First National Tuba-Euphonium Symposium-Workshop at the University of Illinois in 1975. He also played a few sets at the nearby Thunderbird Restaurant (when Red Lehr wasn't playing.)
Howard sold t-shirts similar to those he sometimes wore on SNL.
Things about Howard:
• He doubles on Baritone Sax.
• He owned (at the time) a BBb and an F tuba, both Mahillon from Belgium.
• Plastic garbage can lids make excellent plunger mutes for tuba!

He also plays a mean penny whistle

. During his concert in Cleveland, he got his biggest applause after the song where he played it and he said something like this:
I can't believe I spent all these years carrying around 30 pound instruments and you guys want to hear this thing.

actually, if you watch the old steve martin clip of "king tut" (Does that tell you how old I am?) You can see him in the back playing a BASS sax.
I've played one of those, they are great!
Howard Johnson's website
Looks like a baritone sax to me on his website.
