Banda El Recodo

Post by barry grrr-ero »

I've heard some pretty bad-a__ tuba playing on some Banda El Recodo cuts. They obviously must bring somebody 'heavy' into the studio, or have someone 'mail in' the part digitally. Any clues?

OK, here's a video on Youtube. What's going on here? It shows a guy working his tail off on a Sousaphone. Is what we're hearing all done digitally, or is this guy truly the greatest Sousaphone player on the planet?

Here's another example. Pretty amazing, but is it real? What's up?

The mic is stuffed down in the bell and that gives it a more "electric bass" sound...

Pretty freakin' amazing! I'm not sure I could play a Sousie even half that good when I was young and in great shape. I'll have to get some electronic garbage and try this at home.

I could play the breaks in Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" and Chick Corea's "Spain". Would that have sounded anything like that with a mic shoved down the bell?

There are several other threads on La Banda here on TubeNet. El Recodo is the oldest Banda and still going strong at 75 years!

I have seen many bandas here in California - having a strong Sousaphone player is essential - and they are not always amplified. They play killer long sets and must have lips of steel, but they play fast, high, and often very complicated lines.

There are quite a few Internet radio stations that play almost nothing but Banda - get the free phone app TuneIn (or go to Tunein.com) and just search on "banda." There are many Youtube clips around as well.
