Dutoit Prokofiev Symphony No. 5 1989

Post by DominicTuba »

I am currently listening to a recording of Prokofiev 5 by Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony from 1989, and I'm curious as to who is playing the tuba.

Ellis Wean or Dennis Miller.

Ellis left in 1989 and Dennis started in 1989, so unless you can pinpoint when in 1989 it was, it may be difficult to know. Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

Well, I did a little googling, and I found May 5th, 1989 as a release date, and 1988 as the date of the actual recording in Saint Eustache Church.

Sounds like Ellis Wean. Recordings of MSO with Ellis Wean are awesome. Such presence while never become aggressive.

Agreed about Ellis Wean. Such immediacy of articulation and unmistakable presence in the texture. That recording and others really cured me of the idea that there was stereotypical limitations to what the tuba should be expected to do in an orchestral setting.

Ellis used to have a set of mouthpieces whose rims we are flat as a table top. I am not kidding. They ended up getting stolen, and then he started making his own at some point. I am sure they helped with his impeccable attacks- they were really remarkable. A real badass.

I like that recording, the LAP one with Previn, and the Atlanta one with Levi. Great interpretations and tuba playing.
