Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Seeds of Tranquility"

Post by Chriss2760 »

Does anyone know who played the tuba in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? My friend has owned a horn, (well, most of it, anyway,) since about 1978. The case has the band's name and "Seeds of Tranquility" on it. That may be the name of a song, a tour or maybe even the name of the horn, for all I know. (It is kind of a cool name for a horn at that!) The horn is an old four valve BBb Conn. It came into his life without a bell and has remained as such for the past 27 years. :( (Also, if anyone has a line on a bell, I'd love to know about it.)

I know that drummer/harmonica master Jimmie Fadden also played tuba on an album or two for the Dirt Band. Maybe it's his horn?

Don't know much about this band but here is tuba for sale and the Nick Rail Music claims that it used to belong to the band.

I contacted the store and was told that they think this is a European tuba. Either Austria, Germany or Czech… probably Czech. The bell has no lacquer on it. The bell has probably been cut or replaced to go from Bb to C. The make was probably on the bell. There is a serial number on the second valve casing (#309).

That is the only tuba player I come up with, too. On either the "Alive" or "Rare Junk" LP
"Seeds of Tranquility" is not on either - in fact I don't see it listed on any of their albums that I find track listings for.

There is a bass guitar/tuba player called Freebo who shows up on a lot of alt.folk.country bands but I have no indication of any connection to the Dirt Band.
