Tom and Jerry Blast Off to Mars...

Post by Dylan King »

This is a new Tom and Jerry feature just recently came out on DVD. Steve and Julie Bernstein, a husband and wife composing duo, who worked with Richard Stone scoring Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and other modern Warner cartoons did the music. What's interesting is how they went about it.

They didn't have a budget for a band like they're used to, and did most of the movie using midi sounds. They ended up hiring a flutist, violinist, and myself on tuba to "liven-up" the sound. This kind of thing is getting more and more popular with composers these days. I even ended up scoring a scene from the picture. It was a lot of fun.

I went into Steve and Julie's home studio for about two hours and recorded all the parts. There are some particularly interesting tuba parts in chapter 14, where the robot monster is trying to destroy earth. It turned out pretty good. Everything was recorded on the Yorkbrunner. The live tuba makes a big difference.

Here's a link to the movie...
