Mahler 1/Solti/LSO/1964

Post by mikalengen »

Just been listening to George Solti's recording from 1964 of Mahler 1 with the London symphony, and wonders who is playing the tuba part.

Also interested in who the tubists of LSO were from Philip Catelinets departure in 1956, and until John Fletchers arrival i 1968. Denis Wick mentions a Herbert Walker in his writings, but he died in 1963 according to Wick.

Does anyone know?

Hello,
It was, most likely, Alan Jenkin. He was John Fletcher’s immediate predecessor at the LSO.
Here’s a link to a photo of him and three other LSO members on Daytona beach with their instruments. Jenkin is apparently playing a Barlow F.
