mpc for leningrad tuba

Post by tubabike »

I have a student who owns a Leningrad BBb tuba. We are having problems finding a good mpc that will fit the leadpipe correctly, (it does not have a separate receiver but rather just a reinforced receiving end to the leadpipe). Currently he is using a mpc from a York monster Eb- it fits well but shows much age and damage to the rim. It seems that most 'standard' euro & american shank mpcs are too big.

Anyone have suggestions on what to look for?

Many Thanks-

If the really deep Wick 1 or the slightly more bowl shaped but slightly smaller Wick 2 work, great. If they don't, for example, intonation off, takes too much breath, low register fuzzy, etc., then call Jeff Rideout at Custom Music and have him recommend one of the PT mouthpieces and order it in the "S" shank.

Also, Mike Finn may have a couple of MF4's left of a run done with the smaller shank, if the tuba needs a little bit shallower bowl to get definition to the intonation.

Look -- from your own posting, it could be either the "S" or the "XS" posting. The horn needs to be taken to a tech and measured.

PLUS -- if it has not been reamed internally to the proper taper, no mouthpiece will fit it, and a tech will have to determine whether or not it needs to be reamed, or if the entire end of the leadpipe of the horn should be rebuilt with a standard receiver.

Is it advisable to ream receivers not made out of a thickly walled piece of brass or nickel silver?

If one reams a receiver just being the end of the leadpipe reinforced by an outer nickel silver ring, isn’t there are risk that the ring will loose its seat?

Yes and yes.
Not to get too far off track, but what did you do when you had your Alex?

Mine, for example, is CLEARLY just the end of the leadpipe reinforced by an outer nickel silver ring.

Hi! I would go with having a COMPETENT tech refitting/re-engineering the receiver! Dan Oberloh fixed an old Besson Stratford BBb for me in a jiffy! Now I can put a beginner on it with a Kelly, or other kid-friendly mouthpiece, and not worry about it! Al.

Was wondering if you did any work on the receiver when you had your Alex (i.e had it reamed out or tapered). My tuba has the nickel silver sleve fitted over the end of the leadpipe. I detect almost no taper in the receiver. This conversation got me thinking about that when the whole receiver/taper/reaming thing got brought up.

That's all. Not very exciting, I know.

This is in fact one of the Leningrads as mentioned. I'll see my student next Monday and will get some pics of the horn/ leadpipe, etc posted.

In the meantime here is a thread from when we picked up the horn a few years back:

Thanks again everyone for all of the help- we should be able to get a good fit mpc soon!

Michael, you should know that I can easily make a shank to fit anything. Bring it over.

Gotcha.

I'm using a Doug Elliott on mine, too (though mine is the smaller of the two sizes). No problems. I have no plans to adjust the receiver.

Thanks!

No, but I need to sell some mouthpieces so I can pay for their storage...

Have you seen this Honda video?

Watch at :32 to :38 to see one of those cars, an S600.

Yes, I'm taking orders and making mouthpieces. I think I will be in full production later in the summer.

No, not one of mine. That Honda video was filmed in New Zealand. Mine aren't restored yet.
