Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

As a National Guard Band, we play for our Governor quite often. Our band had an incident a couple of years ago while I was getting back in and while our Gov. was trying to get elected, the band was playing for a Memorial Day event in our state when the soon to be elected Gov. started to campaign at a Veterans event. For the record, Military Bands CANNOT play for politicians campaigning EVER. What I heard what happened is the band slowly started to exit, stage right, in front of everyone. Oops
We played for the first time at this event last year since this happened. Our Gov. wasn't there, I guess he was busy with the North Koreans.

I've done burlesque shows several of times (PLAYED the tuba that is... just providing music with a band)LoyalTubist wrote:About the only thing I won't do is a strip show. (Yes, I have been asked!)
I'll pretty much play for anyone and with anyone.
I prefer to think of music as ABOVE arguments or disagreement of doctrine. It's a place inside which we can all agree -- as to successfully play TOGETHER you have to leave all the bullsh*t outside. If you disagree with each other while playing, it just does not work... it forces us to all be on the level and not work against each other... we can learn from it.
Playing music is like sex or pizza or beer. When it is good, it's like the best thing ever. When it's bad... well.... it's still pretty good.

These guys are "playing" in a way - against them. You do what you can to promote what you believe.schlepporello wrote:I absolutely refuse to play for or have anything to do with the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas. Any group of people who would treat our men fighting in Iraq and their families the way this group does has no room in my heart.

We had an incident here in southeastern PA (don't remember which town it was) back during the last presidential election. "W" was in town giving a speech and the local school band wouldn't play, stating that since it was a campaign stop and not just a visit from the president, they didn't feel they could support one candidate over the other. Not sure who made the call, the band director or the superintendent, but it made the 6 o'clock news and was sort of a controversy for a few days.JohnH wrote:Public school bands are the same way, but that doesn't stop politicians from asking. When I taught high school band I got calls all the time. I always refer them to the superintendent who politely tells them hell no. I have seen PS bands do it, though, and under orders from their bosses.ai698 wrote:As a National Guard Band, we play for our Governor quite often. That was one of the reasons I got out of high school band, every little crappy event looked at the school band as a source of free entertainment.

Regarding supporter versus non-supporter, I wonder in more detail. Was the decision-maker:bloke wrote: ........
As just a wild guess, would you suppose that the person who "made the call" was a supporter or a non-supporter of W?
and (another poster) regarding the "free entertainment" thing...I only WISH that more high school bands were (indeed!) entertaining. :(
1) A supporter who feels so strongly that he would ignore or break rules in order to make a decision that favors his political beliefs.
2) A supporter who feels that following rules and being non-partisan takes precedence over his own political beliefs.
3) A non-supporter who feels that following rules and being non-partisan takes precedence over his own political beliefs.
4) A non-supporter who feels so strongly that he would ignore or break rules in order to make a decision that favors his political beliefs.
I guess in this case, we can rule out option 1.
Personally, I respect people in categories 2 and 3 much more than people in categories 1 and 4.
Regarding high school bands, the world would be wonderful place if they were so entertaining that they had to refuse many requests for their appearances!
Cheers,
Allen

The standard though was "We just need SOMETHING to make us look legitimate... I mean, would they even let kids come here if we weren't legitimate!?"JohnH wrote:The standard phrase was, "We just need a group to come down and make some noise."

I think what it comes down to is not who I play for, but those people with whom I will play. I think people would have to do some pretty extremely terrible things for me to not play for/with them. Where I am from, gigs are few and very far between, and you can't really pick and choose.
Everything you play for is experience and makes you a better player/person for going through it if you treat it in the right fashion.
Remember, if someone accosts you for playing at a questionable event, you can just say, "well why were you there to see me then?"

I think this points out that you can't prevent certain people from enjoying your music (for whom you will work) ("excuse me, Row 3, seat 12 Proscenium will you please leave the hall; the tuba will not perform otherwise... ), but that there are those you will not work with!bloke wrote:The gigmeister occasionally had to find a sub for me.
