Navy Band Tour

Just a quick plug for the Navy Band's annual National Tour. Leaving today and covering the northeastern US over the next 26 days. Here's a link to the itinerary:

If I can get someone elseâ€™s laptop to work Iâ€™ll add a brief tour log like the Marines did last October. If I canâ€™t, the Navy Band web site should also contain a tour log for other folks comments.

Great show this year. Lots of soloists. At least a 50% chance of hearing a tuba or euphonium solo every night! Make sure you say hi to the guys: Roger Behrend and Joe Brown, euphonium, and Karl Hovey and Andrew Oppenheim, tuba.

You're coming to South Jersey on April 2 and I'm looking forward to an afternoon of great band music!

Is there a playlist published?

BTW, Hovey is a great name for a tubist!

Well, hello from the road.

Due to technical problems and personal lassitude, I did not keep up this thread as intended. Also, there is an "official" Navy Band travel log posted next to each date on the itinerary.

We're starting the last week of tour today, will finish and be back in DC on Apr. 3. Just a few thoughts about the tour so far:

Crowds have been great, large and enthusiastic. Have not run into any TubeNetters, but perhaps that is due to timing: some of the colleges we've played, like S.U.N.Y. and New England Conservatory, have been on spring break. I would certainly not forsake a week of sun and fun, 'cause it has been COLD this tour!

Hall highlights: Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, Paramount Theater (beautifully restored old-style vaudeville hall) in Rutland, VT., and Jordan Hall at NEC.

Free-time highlights (not that there is a lot of down time during tour!) include going under the Horseshoe at Niagra Falls, and renting a car for a side trip to Rochester with some Eastman alums. Again, we caught spring break, but we made up for it with a brew pub reconnaissance. I, of course, refrained from partaking as the designated driver...

Did a masterclass during the U of Maine's Day of Brass and Wind hosted by Chip Farnham. Good kids, fun day.

Just so you know, it's not to late to come and hear us! Check the itinerary and make your plans. We have two basic shows, and with various soloists we end up with four different shows. I soloed last night in Ridgefield, and will again before it's all over. Roger Behrend is also a soloist, and it is with his blessing (and his laptop!) that I'm able to post this message.

It's a fun concert, and the price is always right-- free!

you should get the Concert Band in Spring of 2008!

You should also get the Commodores jazz group and the Country Current bluegrass group this fall!

Yes, I did get a real computer: a sweet 20-inch IMac! What I brought on tour, however, was the usual PC laptop junk that belonged to someone else. I will be buying a nice IBook laptop as soon as Apple decides which (*^(&(*!! chips to put in them!

Hello again from the road.

Had a great concert in Scranton. Played (I think) at a hall on the campus of Lackawanna College. Beautiful hall, tiny stage, wildly enthusiastic crowd.

BTW, today (30 March-Roger Behrend) and tomorrow (31 March-Karl Hovey) are the last chances of the tour to hear euphonium or tuba solos. Otherwise, you'll have to be satisfied with the band's usual excellence, and the soloing of lesser instruments including (gasp!) a vocal soloist!

The last day of tour! I can't wait to be back in D.C., the land of endless traffice jams and politics, politics, politics.

I trust nothing unusual happened while we were gone? I'm reassured knowing our shipmates, and the jarheads across the street, had things under control.

I heard the Marines had to do two ceremonies this last month! How do they stand up to the strain?
