I'm looking for information and sources on what keys of tubas are used in orchestra and how related to performance practice... ie German orchestras using BBb or Berlioz on F, etc... Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

In German music Kontrabaßtuba refers specifically to the BB-flat tuba and Baßtuba refers to the F tuba.

In France they had a little C tuba that was pitched a step higher than a euphonium but had six valves. This was the intended instrument for Maurice Ravel's arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.

Berlioz was the pioneer composer when it came to tuba. His tuba parts were intended for a large instrument.

Well, I started this. You can find other tidbits in other threads of this forum.
