Thank goodness there wasn't a spelling/grammer portion.

NYSSMA is what it is. And, it certainly isn't the best way to evaluate a student's performance, then compare it to other performances from around the State heard on different days by different adjudicators, rank them, and select the members for the All-State ensembles. But, that's the way NY does it. Most 100's on tuba do get in, but not always. It's a lot tougher to get in on flute, alto sax, clarinet and trumpet. At least you lost the point on sight-reading which is the most difficult to prepare for and have control over. If you lost points on scales, you wouldn't deserve to get in. If you go into NYSSMA thinking you won't ace your solo, you don't deserve to get in either. It's the BS points that get to me. Adjudicators deciding for no good reason that a student shouldn't get the 100 and then coming up with a vague reason to justify the score. Not making All-State isn't the worse thing in the world. I know plenty of fine teachers and players who never made All-State. Most of your musical development will , most likely, happen after HS anyway!

True, I played at like 9:30 after getting up at 6 and going to school. I much would have rather played at 3PM on saturday(the next day). I'm happy with what I got though. Hopefully I'll make 1st chair in the area all state band. Last year I got to play in the orchestra and I kind of like that better, but w/e. I liked the dude that judged me though. When he talked to me after he made it sound like I didn't do too good but when I got home and my teacher emailed me the score I was surprised. Im going to get started on a solo for next year right away though, that way I should be prepared next year.

You just displayed everything that is wrong with NYSSMA.

The great thing about NYSSMA is that you get to play solos, get judged by (usually) more knowledgable musicians, get to experience a festival, and maybe have a chance to go to all-county/area/state.

What's bad is when everyone is just playing to try to go to all-state. Then there is pressure and stress involved, and you start practicing a solo a year ahead so that you can play it perfectly. Is it any surprise that people usually get more points off for sightreading than the solo? You should prepare your solo in a reasonable amount of time, and enjoy the experience, and not neglect every other aspect of playing.

NYSSMA should not be an audition for All-State.

You could have just needed "more dynamic contrast".

Judges should really just have stamp with that one.
True. I remember getting grilled with that one the last couple of years. I almost felt like I was exaggerating the dynamics this time, but I guess it turned out to be alright.
