Any news on Mike Forbes solo CD? Is it out already or is it on hold?

I just heard Michael Forbes' CD streaming at Tower Records in Tokyo.

WOW

He has a really full and clear sound. I don't hear too many tuba CD's with such nice phrasing and musicality (even with professionals) and he just played the Koetsier Concertino so beautifully. If I didn't spend $200 on contemporary classical CDs I would've definitely gotten it.

I'm glad to hear that the Koetsier CD is making the rounds already...BUT! If you would do a "starving-tuba-solo-cd-maker" a huge favor and order the CD from the Sotto Voce website so as to recoup most of my investment in the project.

One catch, however: I don't have it up there yet--but I will by the end of the week (fingers crossed).

The cd was awesome. Everyone needs to buy this when it comes out on the sotto voce website. It's freakin sweet!! Kudos to Mike!!

For you equipment junkies who can't wait for the liner notes, Mike performs on this CD using a Yamaha 822 F, with both Miraphone C3 and C4 mouthpieces, depending on the tune.

That is the clearest sound, and the most color I've ever heard from the 822F. Unbelievable....

Hello all--and thanks for all the kind words regarding this new solo CD. I am indeed playing the Yamaha F (822). And for all you genealogists, the horn I'm playing is exactly the same horn that Toby Hanks once owned. It's the same one he recorded his "Sonata" album with. Interestingly, that album also includes Koetsier's "Sonatine." So...for the first time in tuba history (I think), the same work has been recorded by 2 different artists playing the exact same instrument!!

Anyway, the Sotto Voce Quartet webpage now has the "Forbes Plays Koetsier" album up and ready for purchase (PayPal). I thank you all in advance for purchasing the album there (through me) to help me recover at least a portion of the costs in recording a disc with this many extra musicians.

That claim is probably valid, Mike, if you add the qualifier, "solo tuba." After all, Gene Pokorny has certainly recorded many of the same works on the same instrument that was played by Arnold Jacobs, for example.

Steve...indeed, I would have to add the qualifier "Solo Tuba" to my remark about the Sonatine being recorded both by Toby & I on the same instrument. The way horns are traded and passed on through generations these days, I would imagine there are probably a number of folks recording orchestral or band works with the same instrument--but I still think this is the first time this has happened in the solo realm...I pose the question to the board if they know of any other instance.
