Just recorded myself playing 3 horns:

Yamaha Eb (YEB-381)
Willson Eb (3400 "Erickson")
Conn 56JCC
(Conn Helleberg mpc for all 3)

One mic was about a meter away -- 45deg in front/overhead
A second mic was about 20 meters away -- 4 meters up on a side wall of the church auditorium (standard "old fashioned" layout for 250 person room -- longer than wide, high ceiling).

It was very difficult to hear any difference between these three horns, so although the distant mic did add some room ambience, the close mic was predominant in the mix.

If I ever do this again, I will move my "close" mic to the distance of a typical audience member -- probably about 5 meters away, or more.

I now suspect why Mr. Dallenbach has such a large sound on all of the CB recordings with his YCB-621 -- mic placement can certainly help!
