Pretty wedding tune - Help

Post by charlieJ »

Hi all,

So, my daughter is getting married Saturday and I have a nice acoustic thing going with a great singer. Tonight my wife says "you should play that thing you practice all the time - its really pretty". After racking through a few tunes, it turns out she's talking about the 3rd movement of Winter from Tuba Carnival. Yikes is an understatement - I suc at it, even though she likes it. She insists, with a "just take out the parts you don't want to play" (namely - the whole piece). She persists....I whine....I don't want to drag my listing lungs and uncoordinated double tongueing through this.

So, any ideas an something cool yet emotional that would be a nice dedication (and doesn't take 8 years to perfect)??

Thanks in advance,

Charlie

....who will never, ever, ever, nail this piece.

You are playing for a bunch of folks who aren't coming for a tuba recital -- SO don't play a traditional "tuba" piece. Play some nice, lovely "pop" wedding tune that everyone will recognize, that you can throw in tons of feeling, and with some upper register stuff where your Eb can just sing.

Everyone will love it and you won't have to kill yourself preparing.

Good luck, and congratulations!

I remember hearing Oystein Baadsvik talking about when he first proposed playing Vivaldi's Winter. He said something like he thought he was crazy for suggesting it. Why not just play Flight of the Tuba Bee, it's about the same speed?

Seriously, The Four Seasons is probably one of the most commonly used pieces of wedding music. Just play the Largo section of Winter, it's perfect wedding music.

I heard Oystein saying it took a year to play Winter, and 8 years to be happy with it. Yikes - thats dedication. Amen on the bumblebee...says a lot about how I play the 3rd movement when my wife thinks its a slow pretty tune. I'll get on itunes and listen to the suggestions.

Thanks guys!

A few months ago I was fooling around after practice and ran through "The Swan" from "Carnival of the Animals". Didn't sound too bad on the tuba, though you will risk the displeasure of any cellists in the audience.

How 'bout the Bach Air? - Tons of arrangements available, pretty, not too difficult, nice for weddings.
Check for trombone arrangements as well, play 'em down an octave.

He beat me to it. Air for the G String. Change the key if'n you wanna. Won't be a dry seat in the house. Stay away from the Wedding Song.

8 years to perfect, you do not even have 8 days!

Play something that you already know very well; something that you like, that you wife likes and that your daughter likes. This is not a gig, this is one of the most important things in your life and you are likely to be nervous because of that alone.

best wishes to you,
best wishes to the upcoming marrage,
Mark

PS,
The this is not a gig comment was not meant to take anything away from playing. Those who know me know that when work is involved I am extremely serious (I have been accused of being overly serious). However, life must be put in perspective.
