Can't believe I'm doing this....

Hello Tubenet...this is my first post, normally I wouldn't do this, but I have to.

Okay, so I was in a car accident this summer on my way to IEI and my old horn got pretty beat up. Luckily our insurance company was able to get me money to get a new horn. I totalled a car, but I got a new horn. (the car was a chevy metro, my euphonium is worth more..hehe) Anyways, I got a new 642 S and I like it, good sound, good projection, all that stuff, BUT I have learned that I already need to replace valve guides. I took it to a repair person that I know and trust and she said that it looks like the valve guide channels are sharp and cutting away at the plastic coating of the valve guide, thus making them loud and not as responsive. Anyone else had this problem? It falls under warranty, so tomorrow it's going to the place I bought it from and supposedly it'll get fixed, but I'm hesitant.

Opinions?

...and there do exist replacement 'hybrid" guides that are a combination of metal and plastic. They might wear better.

I don't have to pay for it, the guy at Prowinds said that if it is what I said it is, then he can fix it quick and get it over with. I was just curious as to other peoples' experiences with it.

Yes the plastic guides wear and are easily damaged. They (Yamaha guides) should be insert molded with metal. Typically the plastic cracks/wears off, exposing metal which makes noise as it hits the side of the slot when you press the valve.

Consider this a normal wear item.

I know of two recent "straight out of the box" Yamaha euphoniums that had broken valve guides from the factory. The slots were fine.

But get a second opinion on the channel for the guides. I think that was the root of the problem in many of the 2155's.
