Ben Thomson, 20 year old Tuba player at the RNCM Manchester has retained his BBC Radio 2 Young Brass soloist title for 2007.
The qualifiers were a few weeks ago:-
"Matthew White and Ben Thomson were both in fabulous form in the first semi-final. Matthew, currently playing with the Leyland Band chose 'Caedlidh' by Rodney Newton, 'A Tribute to Archie Beaton' and 'A Joy Untold', whilst the defending champion Ben chose the '2nd Movement' from Arutunian's 'Tuba Concerto' and 'Ionel', 'Romanian Dance Number 2'."
Final was last night:-
"Twenty year old Ben Thomson became the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist for 2007 at the RNCM in Manchester on Saturday evening.
Ben's performances of Martin Ellerby's Tuba Concerto was enough to convince judges Sheona White and Ray Farr that the RNCM student should be declared the winner.
Jamie Cooper, Matthew White and Rebecca Crawshaw were also in contention for the title. All of the soloists were accompanied by Black Dyke conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs.
The final will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Friday 23rd February at 9.30pm.
A retrospective of the final will appear on 4BR soon."

You will be able to hear the performance via www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 I would presume.
As well as being a phenomenal (brass band, quintet and orchestral) Tuba player, Ben is a very grounded guy, and great fun to be around. Well done mate!
