Should I join ASCAP or BMI?

Post by Stefan Kac »

I need to join a performing rights organization soon. Which one would you recommend? Their websites have nothing but platitudes, and I don't feel like the differences (if any) are at all clear just from reading that information.

One cannot join both, as they are very careful about that! I'm a member of BMI. I joined it because it is "hipper", because John Williams switched from ASCAP to BMI, and because I have worked quite a bit with other composers who are members of BMI, especially on the show "The Amazing Race".

It really makes very little difference as far as your royalties are concerned.

ASCAP has fancier parties but BMI is bigger these days, with more "big money" artists. Danny Elfman, Eminem, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are all BMI artists.

I hope this helps.

Gook luck.
