Those days were quite a long time ago.Scooby Tuba wrote:The last time I was in Germany the exchange was DM3.4=$1...
The street vendors were charging DM1 for a tasty sausage on a wonderful hard roll and one town's brewery charged DM1 for a 4 pack of 1/2 litre bottles of the best pilsner I've ever had... (2 litres of great beer for 29 cents...).
Those were the days...

The Euphman beat me to it. That's my advice too.EuphManRob wrote:goldenmoose, Given what you've told me, unless it would seriously hamper your chances of future employment in the Orlando area (you still haven't told us why you thought that it might), I would definitely go for it. The only other reason I might advise not doing so is if you are saving money for some future long-term thing (such as getting married or trying to move), in which case you would want to be making as much money as possible.
Cheers,

I agree with Bloke. Even now, we don't know enough. And Allen is right that this becomes more about those responding than about the original poster. But then, that sort of response has real value, too.
I can't see how going to Germany would hurt future job prospects. Are you afraid of losing a theme park gig? I can assure you that those can evaporate like a snowflake in the river, even if you have nodding assurance you'll be brought back for the next year. Ask TubaRay and myself. Ask Gail Robertson. You'd be pretty disappointed to miss the experience of a summer in Germany only to find that whatever you thought you were gaining in Orlando got swept away with a management decision.
After all, playing in a theme park is not exactly a career gig. Those who have been very successful for more than a few years doing it (e.g. Gail Robertson again) are the exception. Even headliners rarely get really long-term gigs.
These are jobs to enjoy when you can get them, but not to build a life's work.
Think strategically about Germany. So, the pay may not be so good. Can you get lessons from a high-end player in Germany while you are there? It might enhance rather than diminish your future job prospects if you can take advantage of Europe's deeper cultural resources. Americans are always impressed when people "study abroad". That would be a way to leverage the pay you would be giving up.
Actually, the advice is to think strategically, period. Balance the effects of your decision on your short-term situation with what you might be able to for your long-term situation.

It could have been worse; you only had to put up with other peoples' spouses/significant others. For even higher pain levels, there could have been: other peoples' kids and/or other peoples' pets. Anyway, it sounds like enough to make one speculate about the threshold for justifiable homicide.
The situation you describe isn't unique to Europe. It is, however, a cautionary note for anyone considering a gig or tour away from home terrirory.
Myself, I'm glad I got to spend a semi-working summer in Europe when I was young.
Cheers,
Allen

Close your eyes. If you see yourself going-GO. It's really that simple.
I had a chance to travel overseas and I went. It made me happy.
I cringed as I read of Joe's tour with B.S. going on. I toured with a lead guitarist and girl singer right before they divorced.
Anyone, like mois, who likes to travel will do so at the drop of a hat. I got to see cool places from New Zealand to Siberia but I also learned that we only need go around the next bend to be in a whole new universe-stocked with some really neat people.
Biers to you,
