What's your newest tuba trick?

So now I can do a wicked Amazing Grace on my tuba (multiphonics). I've done it like 50 times in the last few days! And I was even told that it sounds like bagpipes (add a little bit of reee erhhh..... into it).

Not sure why you'd want to sound like bagpies, but if you've got Amazing Grace down cold, try America the Beautiful next. That one has given me hours of amusement! (I can't speak for my neighbors, though...)

My old Yamaha YBB-641 could roll over . . . or, it rolled over a few times seemingly on its own.

Did any low A flats fall out?


Oh, and my new trick is making bubbling/gurgling noises when I depress the fourth valve. Two water keys, and still I have to do the "King Spin" every ten minutes!

I was sitting on my couch the other day, watchin the idiot box. For some reason, there's bagpipes playing Amazing Grace. I pick up my tuba (already on my lap!), and find out it's in Eb!

The bass line in my HS marching band would play bagpipe music for our cadence, all but one would be the drones leaving one to be the chanter, was a big hit back in the 70's!

The trick that I've been working on is to play with a good sound and to play in tune and in time. It's a hard one, but I hope that someday I'll get it!

I like to shake my tuba on my lap while playing, and it gives a sound similar to a Leslie. I'm waiting for the perfect moment to debut that sound.

I'm working on counting rests and such. Last summer I was in Chicago and realized that Gene Pokorny was using his left index finger to keep track of the bars. So I've been doing the same.

I do something similar myself. For me, counting rests is one of the most difficult things about playing tuba.

Oh, I spend a good deal of time doing that, too. In just the past few weeks I have played in a wide variety of groups. These include: symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, concert band, chamber orchestra, brass ensemble, tuba-euph quartet, and polka band. I will also be playing in a duo with a tenor banjo in the coming week. How's that for variety? Obviously, some of these require extension counting of rests, and some of them have you greatly anticipating the rest that comes with a 10-15 min. break.

So I guess I play on both the bright side and the dark side. What do you think?
