I played the 1812 on the big Holton for the first time last night. What a gas! This piece plays up to the Holton's strengths--enveloping pianissimos, power anywhere you need it, singing upper range, agility. The 1812 may be even more satisfying than Dies Irae. I had never played with this particular group before, so that even in the throes of sight reading folks were looking to see which horn was making that huge sound. It was fun to see what it could do at the max. Kind of like running a car on the Salt Flats.
Any suggestions for other pieces to "road test" it on?

It is impossible to make things foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

I actually was not being sarcastic and thank you for the reply.bloke wrote:JUST IN CASE you're not being sarcastic and were just a bit gullible regarding my over-the-top (yet sincere) recommendation of using "that" tuba on "that" piece...Tubanese wrote:Wow... is this true? Hindemith - Symphonic Metamorphosis
If so, that's amazing!
...I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever of any knowledge of makes and models of tubas in the realm of Paul Hindemith...

Although it would be really interesting if there is a piece written for the Holton 345.

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.
