B&S CC Tubas

Hello, I need your opinions on B&S CC tubas. I'm in the market for my first tuba, and these are high on my list.

I got a 4/4 PT-20 CC (rotary valve) early this year and it is a fantastic instrument!

Its incredible low register belies its modest size, while it can sing as lyrically as a Besson Eb in the high register. Its intonation is as good as any tuba I have played.

I bought it to just fill the gap between my 6/4 Neptune and Melton Eb, but am finding it is the tuba I use the most. I even used it last week to play Rachmaninov Symphony No.2 in concert at the request of the conductor who thought it "perfect" for the job.

If you want a 6/4 than I would suggest you consider the B&S Neptune - after 18 months with mine, its sound still makes me smile!

Further to Doc's point of trying in advance - I must add that both my B&S tubas were specially selected at the factory as the best of a batch.

My opinion is based on my own PT20P. I love B&S PT tuba's. I think I played the first 12 or PT20's from the factory and I like them all. I bought the one I did because it spoke to me, although I could have taken any of them and been very happy. The quality control is still high, and they're tested out by a great tuba player. As with all horns, you need to play them for yourself before you give up your money.

I personally own a B&S PT-20PS (the piston/silver model) and boy i'll tell you, it's THE BEST 4/4 CC tuba i've played on. I played this horn against two other 20's, a MW 2145, a Mira 188 & 186 and this 20 came out on top. New, they're like any other horn (working wise). the valves need to "broken in". maintenance basically. try to come over to SA for TMEA and try out all of the goodies at the custom booth. it'll be worth your time.

btw, what is your playing situation?

I'm in high school, and I'm looking to get a head start on a CC tuba for college. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to have one for The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. I'm also planning to major in music during college, but also have a Pre-Med major to fall back on.

I auditioned on April 14, and I'm not sure if I made it or not. However, I will make it eventually, because I'm still pretty young.

Guys, I hear Brice play almost every week in community band & he's the real deal. He's got a lot of talent & dedication. This young man is GOOD !!
